The Leyland Netball League will celebrate their 35th Anniversary at the above event. Yes it really is 35 years ago since the league held its first round of fixtures and they included such names as “Sumpter 7”, a pub in the Penwortham area now called Saints Netball Club, Wigan Juniors, Up Holland etc. Over the years many teams have developed into clubs and have opened opportunities to young players to represent their County and indeed received England Caps.
Sara Bayman, Up Holland HS, Karen Atkinson, Wigan Junior, both current England Squad members and Emma Dovey (Leyland Youth) in the Netball Europe U19 Championships. All three started their participation at the Leyland Courts in the League.
The most significant club LEYLAND MOTORS a founder member Ruth Watson nee’ York Ruth is also a founder member of the League Netball League. To celebrate this very important date we wish to call all players up to enjoy a veteran tournament of 55+. We call all those players who have represented Leyland and wish to be involved in this event.
We wish to call all other players who have, at one time or another, represented Leyland by playing the game of netball. Ruth has organised training nights each Thursday – if you are interested please get in touch by using the above email address.
Last year the 40th anniversary of the Leyland Netball Club was formed and we did start a memory book, so if there are any more pictures to be added to this history please bring them along before the 3rd July 2010.
The Gala Day will be celebrated in the same way as last year with a barbeque, tea or perhaps a glass of wine or two. More significantly, this year the proceeds from the raffle and tournament being put into a “Netball Foundation” charity. This charity will be developed by Leyland Sports Association to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the League and the focus of the charity will be to help all netball interested people to equip themselves with skills and qualifications to support the netballing community.
Leyland Netball Centre has always supported the first step to talent identification by increasing participation in the player pathway identification process. This charity however will help all people to increase their skills and attain qualification in umpiring, coaching, mentoring. Calling all Volunteers “Why not represent your County and England as an umpire or coach”, through the Netball Foundation we can support many to achieve their dream.
